Craigdarroch Castle reminded me a lot of Hearst Castle, in California. Mostly because they are both “castles” on the outside and adorned mansions with collections of antiques on the inside.
It was 3 stories and took us about two hours to travel through.
This Victorian era castle sits on top of a hill in a current suburban neighborhood. It is open 10am to 4pm and is $14.60 a person. There are cabinets to hold your luggage for 50 cents as well!
Craigdarroch Castle was built by Robert Dunsmuir, an industrial entrepreneur who got rich off of coal. After the family passed it also served as a college for 25 years, and a military hospital. You can see the modifications reflecting these times throughout the mansion.
The Dunsmuir sons also commissioned the second castle, Hatley Castle, which can also be visited in Victoria.
When the father who built this passed away he left everything to his wife. This caused a lot of strife in the family as the sons who were in their 30’s fought for the businesses and the property. Eventually the wife gave a little to her sons at a time. But after so many quarrels the sons didn’t talk to their mom and she eventually passed away. Which is why it served so many public services before it was dedicated as a historic museum in 1979.
What stood out to me the most about Craigdarroch Castle was the gorgeous woodwork and the intricately designed stain glass windows throughout.

Stay:
We stayed at Ivana’s very clean Airbnb. It was very private we were separated from the rest of the house. It was also a quick bus stop away from downtown. It was very affordable and beyond my expectations for its value. 110% recommend.

Flight: AirCanada.
Bus: $5 for a bus day pass in Victoria. The bus gets you just about anywhere but they only take cash. We exchanged currency in advance to be able to pay for our bus tickets. (This is different in Vancouver).
Ferry: To get from Vancouver to Victoria, and vice versa, we took a Ferry which is $17/person.
If you are completely running on public transportation you will also have to take a few busses with separate bus tickets for the Victoria system and the Vancouver system.
